Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party)

EU RANK: 68 (Tier 2: High Performance)

Kansallinen Kokoomus is a liberal-conservative, centre-right party emphasising fiscal responsibility, market-oriented reforms, and strong EU and NATO integration. Led by Petteri Orpo since 2016 (Prime Minister since June 2023), it won the 2023 parliamentary election with 20.8% and 48 seats and leads the current right-leaning coalition. Its core electorate is urban, educated, and strongly represented in business and professional communities.

Disinformation and alternative media

Kokoomus is the clearest case in Finland of formal party-linked media infrastructure: it controls Nykypäivä and the news site Verkkouutiset via its publishing company, and these outlets sit inside Finland’s self-regulatory environment (JSN). The party also benefits from think-tank framing and strong digital strategy. Because its party-owned outlets are mainstream-formatted and within self-regulation, the disinformation/alternative media risk is low (with a note of “capacity exists” due to ownership).

Foreign influence and external alignments

The party is firmly pro-EU and pro-NATO, aligned with the EPP family and Western security policy. No evidence in the provided research suggests hostile foreign-state ties. Foreign influence DMI risk is low.

Media capture, advertising and public service media

Kokoomus’s media ownership is limited to party-linked outlets rather than dominant market assets; nevertheless, it has more structural media capacity than other Finnish parties. Finland’s PSB governance system and regulatory environment constrain overt capture, but the ownership dimension warrants a “low to moderate” capture risk compared with peers.

Corruption, litigation and institutional integrity

Kokoomus receives the largest share of state subsidies in several years due to its parliamentary strength, within a system audited by NAOF and governed by disclosure rules and caps for major donations. In the litigation record, high-profile controversy around a former NCP MP (later Finns Party minister) intersected with investigative reporting and defamation/privacy complaints; prosecutors later dropped cases, underscoring the public-interest standard and the sensitivity of press–politics disputes. DMI corruption and institutional integrity risk is low.

Press freedom, harassment and treatment of media

Kokoomus operates largely within democratic press norms, though high-stakes investigations can trigger legal conflict at the individual politician level. There is no sustained pattern of party-led harassment of journalists in the research base. Press freedom and harassment DMI risk is low.
