Ελληνική Λύση / Ellinikí Lýsi (Greek Solution)

Greek Solution is a right-wing nationalist party founded and led by Kyriakos Velopoulos, positioning itself as a patriotic, sovereigntist and socially conservative alternative to New Democracy on the right. It won 4.34 percent and 12 seats in the June 2023 general election, but significantly outperformed that result in the June 2024 European Parliament elections with approximately 9.3 percent and 2 MEPs, marking its emergence as the principal right-wing alternative for voters dissatisfied with ND’s perceived centrist drift. The party combines nationalist economic messaging, strong anti-immigration positions and Orthodox Christian cultural politics with an anti-establishment rhetorical style. It remains outside the governing majority and is not affiliated with any European party family, operating in the space between mainstream conservatism and the radical right.

Disinformation and alternative media

Greek Solution relies heavily on television talk shows and social media to amplify its messages, punching above its parliamentary weight through algorithmic reach and combative media appearances rather than through owned media infrastructure. Research on the Greek media environment identifies the party as a consumer and amplifier of nationalist and sometimes conspiratorial content on migration, sovereignty and cultural identity issues rather than a systematic producer of coordinated disinformation. Velopoulos’s media style is populist and emotionally charged, and fact-checkers have identified instances of misleading claims in party communications, but no evidence of a centralised disinformation operation exists. Disinformation/alternative media DMI risk is moderate.

Foreign influence and external alignments

Greek Solution’s sovereigntist positioning includes scepticism toward certain EU mechanisms and NATO commitments, particularly in relation to Greek-Turkish relations and Cyprus. The party has made statements broadly compatible with nationalist-conservative European networks, though its formal European affiliations are limited. No credible evidence of foreign state funding or operational influence appears in records through 2025. In 2024 the Supreme Court Prosecutor ordered an investigation into fraud allegations raised by Velopoulos regarding the European elections, an inquiry into claims made by the party rather than misconduct by it. Party funding is within the regulated framework; the party received €1.54 million in regular state subsidies and €307,000 in educational subsidies in 2023 allocations, with private contributions from members of approximately €114,000. Foreign influence DMI risk is low–moderate.

Media capture, advertising and public service media

Greek Solution does not own major media assets and has no institutional capacity to influence public broadcasting governance. Its media strategy relies on earned coverage through controversy and TV panelling rather than ownership or advertising leverage. The party is not a significant recipient of state advertising and does not have the political leverage to influence media regulatory appointments at the current stage of its development. Media capture, advertising and PSB-control DMI risk is low.

Corruption, litigation and institutional integrity

No major corruption proceedings against Greek Solution’s leadership or finance structures appear in court or prosecutorial records through 2025. The 2024 Supreme Court Prosecutor inquiry relating to alleged fraud in the European elections was an investigation into Velopoulos’s own public allegations — not a finding of wrongdoing by the party — and was not directly related to party finance or institutional corruption. Party accounts are within the regulatory framework, though the organisation’s relatively recent formation means its long-term institutional integrity record is limited. DMI corruption and institutional integrity risk is moderate.

Press freedom, harassment and treatment of media

Greek Solution’s communications include frequent attacks on mainstream media as biased or controlled by the established political elite. Velopoulos and party officials regularly delegitimise critical coverage and cultivate a narrative of media suppression of the party’s views. While this rhetoric creates a hostile discursive environment for journalists, no documented pattern of legal harassment, physical intimidation or organised SLAPP-type litigation against specific outlets or journalists has been identified in the period under review. Press freedom and harassment DMI risk is moderate.
