Socialni demokrati (SD – Social Democrats)
EU RANK: 48 (Tier 2: High Performance)
Socialni demokrati is a mainstream centre‑left, pro‑EU social‑democratic party with long government experience and strong roots in trade unions and public‑sector constituencies. It has alternated between governing and opposition roles and currently participates in the governing coalition with Gibanje Svoboda.
Disinformation and alternative media
SD communicates through mainstream press, RTV Slovenija and established online outlets; it is not embedded in a far‑right or conspiratorial media ecosystem. Disinformation‑monitoring for 2015–2025 associates systematic fake‑news production mainly with nationalist and SDS‑adjacent portals, which often attack SD as part of the “old left establishment”. There is no evidence of SD running coordinated fabricated‑news networks. Disinformation and alternative‑media DMI risk is low.
Foreign influence and external alignments
SD is firmly pro‑EU and pro‑NATO, supports sanctions on Russia and backs assistance to Ukraine, aligning with the Party of European Socialists at EU level. Party‑financing reviews show standard public subsidies and domestic donations without indications of hostile foreign‑state funding or control. Foreign‑influence DMI risk is low.
Media capture, advertising and public service media
Historically, SD has had ties to parts of the legacy print and broadcast sector but does not control major media conglomerates in the way associated with some right‑wing networks. In recent years it has supported reforms to strengthen RTV independence and more transparent state‑advertising rules, although as a traditional governing party it also operates within Slovenia’s broader clientelistic patterns in public communication and appointments. Media‑capture, advertising and PSB‑control DMI risk is moderate.
Corruption, litigation and institutional integrity
Litigation mapping notes that several older corruption and abuse‑of‑office cases have involved SD‑linked politicians at national and local levels, reflecting its long tenure in power, but these have not reached the systemic “state‑capture” scale seen in some neighbouring states. Watchdogs continue to scrutinise public‑procurement and state‑enterprise appointments under SD‑influenced governments, yet recent grand‑corruption trials are more focused on cross‑party business networks than exclusively on SD. Corruption and institutional‑integrity DMI risk is moderate.
Press freedom, harassment and treatment of media
SD endorses media‑freedom protections and has not been associated in 2015–2025 with orchestrated harassment, SLAPP campaigns or economic retaliation against critical outlets on the scale seen under the Janša‑led SDS governments. Tensions with individual journalists and editorial lines occur within normal democratic contention, and SD has generally aligned with independent media against attempts to politicise RTV and regulatory bodies. Press‑freedom and harassment DMI risk is low to moderate (coded low).
| Dimension | Risk level | Short justification |
|---|---|---|
| Disinformation & alternative media | Low | Relies on mainstream outlets; disinformation ecosystems are mainly nationalist/SDS‑aligned, not SD‑run. |
| Foreign influence & external alignments | Low | Pro‑EU/NATO, sanctions Russia, PES‑aligned; no hostile‑state financing evidenced. |
| Media capture & advertising / PSB control | Moderate | Traditional governing party with some legacy ties and influence in public communication, but not core oligarchic controller. |
| Corruption & institutional integrity risk | Moderate | Some corruption and abuse‑of‑office cases over time, yet no singular, systemic capture scheme centred solely on SD. |
| Press freedom & harassment of media | Low | Supports RTV independence and not linked to systematic harassment or SLAPPs against journalists. |
